The Madrugada Series
This series of pots focuses on the recent development of a new range of slips and patterns. The resulting decoration has given Paul the freedom to be able to paint directly on to the pots in a more abstract and painterly way, layering colours to create a tapestry of incidental tones and impressionistic brush work.
Named ‘Madrugada’ (meaning dawn in Portuguese), they reflect the journey Paul’s pots make through his travels.
Paul says: “Yes, there is some colour inspiration from my travels, but in a way this is about simplifying the approach, even though the finished results can look quite complex. The bottle forms are as new to me as the decoration – and I did feel that the work needed a new form. These softer less angled forms allow for a drift of decoration, that sweeps around the pot and almost wraps them up. The matt bronze sections reveal the clay of the vessel and remind you that this is a plastic, malleable medium – almost unique in the world of making. I hope that through these pots you feel the vibrancy and warmth of the Mediterranean.”
